Winemakers Notes:
This vintage marks 20 years of professional winemaking for owner Chuck Spenker. For this wine, he and his winemaker-wife Bettyann wanted to craft a very traditional Spenker Zinfandel showcasing the estate grown grapes. A wine that was not too bold, but not too thin. A wine that paired well with food and could be enjoyed on its own.
The 2023 Chuck’s Classic was aged in American Oak giving it prominent vanilla and toasted wood aromas. It has a beautiful dark color. While it is a full-bodied wine, the mouthfeel is nice and smooth and finishes clean. The flavors have great depth but are not as spicey and peppery as the 2018 reserve. Instead, it has a very nice mild hazelnut undertone which rounds out this easily sip-able wine.
The label design is an homage to the original Spenker wine label design used on vintages from 1993 to 1998.
Several Spenker goat cheeses we love with this vintage include:
Herbs de Provence Chevre is our favorite of the savory spreadables, while Strawberry and Chocolate are delicious sweet pairings. Plain Jane (monterey jack) and Chuck’s Classic complement each other very well - bringing out the creaminess of the cheese and the vanilla in the wine.
